Statistical Methods in Medical Research

We will look at surveys of statistical methodology used in The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association and Nature Medicine. A comparison of surveys from 1990, 2000, and 2010 show an increasing trend in the use of more complex statistical methods.

We will also look at a survey of medical research articles where treatment efficacy was contradicted by later studies. What causes research studies to reach the wrong conclusions?
