Abstract:
We look at several well-known cases of scientific findings that were wrong:
the MMR vaccine and autism, the safety of Vioxx pain medication,
effects of estrogen supplementation, and others. Then we take a look
at the common reasons for false research findings. Finally, we discuss a
framework proposed by Ioannidis (2005) for
modeling the probability that a research finding is true.
