Internship reports

Peter Nagy and Jason Hernacki
Western Michigan University

Abstract:
This colloquium will consist of students reporting on data analysis internships and workshops.

Peter Nagy (M.S. Statistics) will talk about his experience as Service Analyst intern at Bosch Automotive Service Solutions. In particular, he will discuss examples of data mining and data visualization techniques utilized at the company.

Jason Hernacki (M.S. Statistics) will report on his experience going to the La Serena School of Data Science 2018 in Chile from August 20-29. Since astronomical observationbs are now more complex than ever, ranging from large images taken over time to highly irregular light curves, astronomers are turning to Data Science tools such as convolution neural networks and unsupervised/supervised clustering. The presentation will introduce some of the data analyses problems astronomers are facing and how data science and statistics can help.
