Statistical Challenges in Kidney Disease Research

Rebecca Scherzer
Principal Research Statistician
Veterans Affairs Medical Center
University of California at San Francisco

Abstract:
Kidney disease has become the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. Over 30 million adults in the U.S. have chronic kidney disease, and yet most are undiagnosed. Early detection and treatment are possible, but there are many barriers, including geographic and racial disparities, and poor screening tests. Challenges for the statistical researcher in this setting include modeling the excess risk in different populations, developing risk scores to predict disease onset and progression, handling competing risk data, and integrating information from multiple candidate biomarkers.

Bio:
Rebecca Scherzer received her PhD in Statistics from Western Michigan University in 2006. Dr. Scherzer directs the Biostatistics Core at the Kidney Health Research Collaborative (KHRC) and has served as the principal biostatistician for the Fat Redistribution and Metabolic Change in HIV Infection (FRAM) since 2005 and the HIV Kidney Substudy within the MACS and WIHS since 2009. Her work has focused on the study of HIV infection and its complications, including kidney disease, cardiovascular risk, body composition, and metabolic changes. To date, she has coauthored over 100 papers in this area. Dr. Scherzer serves as a statistical editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN) and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (JAIDS).
