Comparing two means (independent samples)

1. Open the Microsoft Excel data file. If your data is still in a text file, refer to the instructions on how to convert text files to Excel files.
2. On the menu bar, click on `Tools' and select `Data Analysis'. Choose 'T-test:2 sample assuming equal variances' and click `OK'. A new window will appear.
3. Enter the appropriate cell ranges of your first variable on the Variable 1 range. Enter the appropriate cell ranges of your second variable on the Variable 2 range. If the first row contains variable names, click on `labels in 1st row'.
4. Input the hypothesized mean difference ( $\mu_1-\mu_2$) and the desired alpha level ($\alpha$). Click `OK'.
