The Statistical Computation Lab (SCL) is a cross-disciplinary entity between the Departments
of Statistics and Computer Science. The main purposes of the SCL are to provide statistical and
computational consulting to the faculty and graduate students at Western Michigan University
and to industry in the tri-state area. The SCL also offers services in the preparation of grant proposals.
Computers using the UNIX and windows platforms are used in the lab. The SCL has standard
statistical packages including: SAS, SPSS, S-Plus, R, Minitab, and Excel.

The SCL provides the services listed below. Clients can make an appointment by calling or e-mailing the
director of the SCL, Dr. Joseph W. McKean, Department of Statistics.
- Consulting:
The SCL provides statistical and computational consulting in many areas including:
sample size determination, design of experiments, data management, statistical analyses, preparation of
statistical reports, development of new statistical methodology, and development of statistical and
computational software.
More information about consultation services can be found by clicking on
Consultation.
- Grant Preparation:
The SCL works closely with researchers in other disciplines in preparation of grant proposals. This is
a main focus of the SCL. All WMU researchers involved with collection of data and/or analysis of data
are welcomed and encouraged to use this service.
At this stage of the research, initial analyses should always be performed, including:
power analysis leading to sample size determinations, properly designing experiments which will have sufficient
power to detect effects of interest, and discussions of how the data base will be set up and managed.
- Short Courses:
The SCL offers short courses on a variety of topics in statistics and computer science including: basic statistical
methods, linear models and analysis of variance, multivariate statistics, nonparametric statistics, robust statistics,
statistical software, visual basic. Courses can be designed to cover areas of interest and for different durations
including half day, full day, or week long.
An outline of a full day course in robust nonparametric statistics can be found by clicking on
Robust Course.
This course was presented at the ICSA Meeting in Chicago in June, 2001.
- Web Services:
The SCL offers a wide range of web services. The SCL can design web pages and web software. As an
example of web software SCL developed the web interface for RGLM, robust general linear models software.
To see it click on RGLM .
The SCL is interested in developing online courses. Its basic statistics course, STAT 160, can be found clicking
on Stat 160 .
