Data Science Major

This is a major jointly offered by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics.

Requirements

Background Support (8 credit hours)
Math 1220 Calculus I 4 hrs.
Math 2300 Elementary Linear Algebra 4 hrs.
Computer Science Core (15 credit hours)
CS 2610 R Programming for Data Science` 4 hrs.
CS 3100 Storage and Retrieval of Big Data 3 hrs.
CS 5821 Machine Learning 3 hrs.
CS 4900 Senior Design I 3 hrs.
CS 4910 Senior Design II 2 hrs.
Statistics Core (16 credit hours)
Stat 2600 Statistics Using R 4 hrs.
Stat 4640 Introduction to Statistical Computing 3 hrs.
Stat 5680 Regression Analysis 3 hrs.
Stat 5850 Applied Data Mining 3 hrs.
Stat 5860 Computer Based Data Analysis 3 hrs.
Electives (6 hours): Choose two courses from the following
CS 3400, 3500, 4430/5430, 5180, 5260, 5300, 5400, 5550, 5700, 5820, etc., or
Stat 5610, 5660, 5820, 5670
Other requirements
Writing Course: CS 4900/4910.
Both CS and Stat faculty may advise here. CS projects are external, Stat projects are either external or through the Statistics Consulting Center.
